Singapore Navy commissions first modular Sentinel-class patrol ship built in Germany

Singapore's navy has launched Sentinel, the first of four new offshore patrol vessels built by German shipbuilder Fassmer, designed for versatile maritime security missions.

The Republic of Singapore Navy has taken delivery of Sentinel, the inaugural vessel of a four-ship Sentinel-class offshore patrol fleet built by German shipbuilder Fassmer at its Berne yard. Displacing 2,700 tonnes and measuring 94.85 metres, the ship can be reconfigured for a range of maritime security tasks, launch both manned and unmanned craft, and is armed with a STRALES 76mm guided gun, a RAFAEL 30mm remote weapon, as well as non-lethal systems such as a laser dazzler and water cannon.

It will replace the refurbished ex-Fearless class MSRVs, which will stay in service until the new vessels become fully operational from 2028 onward. Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, Vice Admiral Wilhelm Tobias Abry and RSN Chief of Navy Sean Wat presided over the launch, emphasizing the deepening Singapore-Germany defence partnership. The vessels are designed for high manoeuvrability and endurance, enabling joint operations with the Police Coast Guard and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. After launch, Sentinel will undergo platform acceptance and sea trials before sailing to Singapore.

Why it matters

The new ships boost Singapore's maritime security capabilities and deepen defence cooperation with Germany.
