Singapore's air quality stays in unhealthy range as haze drifts in

All five regions of Singapore recorded unhealthy air quality on Thursday, with the western area posting a 24-hour PSI of 161.

The National Environment Agency warned that haze from Sumatra and Kalimantan is likely to persist as winds blow from the southeast to south, keeping Singapore's air quality in the unhealthy range. On Thursday, the western region logged a 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index of 161, with central, east, south and north showing values of 147, 128, 120 and 113. These readings first crossed the unhealthy threshold at noon on Wednesday and remained elevated overnight.

One-hour PM2.5 concentrations reached the high band in the west briefly on Wednesday afternoon before dropping back to the elevated band. The agency advises the public to limit strenuous outdoor activity, especially vulnerable groups, and to monitor the PSI forecast for the next 24 hours.

Why it matters

Poor air quality poses health risks, especially for vulnerable groups, and limits outdoor activities across Singapore.
