Singer's Fatal Clinic Procedure Sparks Calls for Scrutiny of Regenerative Therapies

Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis died unexpectedly during a plasmapheresis procedure at a private clinic in Athens. The incident prompted two senior academics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School to publicly criticize the marketing of regenerative and anti-aging treatments lacking solid evidence. Professor Maria Gazouli, who also serves on the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Advanced Therapies, called for rigorous regulatory oversight and transparent scientific validation before such therapies reach consumers.

Professor Maria (Maya) Roubelaki echoed these concerns, noting statements from the Hellenic Society for Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine and referencing the April 27, 2026 “Truths and Myths About Cell Therapies” conference. Both emphasized that patient safety depends on clear licensing, proven efficacy, and reliable safety data, irrespective of any direct link to Mazonakis’s death. Their remarks aim to curb the spread of unproven medical promises and reinforce evidence-based practice.
