Single-engine plane crashes near Leukerbad at 2,000 m, rescue teams mobilised

At approximately 16:00 on Tuesday, a single-engine aircraft crashed in the Alpine terrain of the Fluhalp region close to Leukerbad, reaching an elevation of roughly 2,000 metres and near the canton of Bern border. Daniel Imboden, spokesperson for the Kantonspolizei Wallis, announced the incident and noted that details on injuries or fatalities have not yet been released. Residents captured images of a severely damaged fuselage with a thick column of smoke rising from the site.
Emergency services assembled a substantial rescue effort, involving the Leukerbad fire department, the KWRO rescue organization, the Vaud cantonal police, and three helicopters operated by Air Zermatt. Authorities expect to provide further updates on Wednesday. The crash highlights the difficulties of aviation safety in mountainous areas.
