Sinkhole at Samnanger hydro project widens, prompting evacuations and safety concerns
A sinkhole that swallowed construction equipment and an explosives container in Samnanger has grown by about two metres, forcing workers to be evacuated and drawing police and fire crews to the site.
During excavation for a new small-scale hydroelectric plant in Samnanger, Vestland, a sinkhole opened and engulfed a scaffolding structure and a container of explosives. Four laborers managed to flee through a window as the ground gave way on Friday night. Firefighters and police responded immediately, and the incident was reported to the regional emergency centre.
A day later, the hole had widened by about two metres, prompting concerns over possible damage to adjacent residences. Emergency responders continue to work on site while representatives of the developer, Aldal kraft, and the contractor, GBS entreprenør, travel to evaluate the situation. The expansion of the sinkhole is being closely monitored for any threat to the surrounding community.
Why it matters
