Six people killed in suspected extortion attack in southwestern Colombia

At least six people died after a vehicle was set on fire and a shootout occurred in Suaza, Huila, in an incident linked to extortion.

In Suaza municipality of Colombia's southwestern Huila district, an assault resulted in at least six fatalities, according to Corpades, a local human-rights organization. Video footage posted online shows a vehicle carrying five people being set ablaze, and a subsequent exchange of gunfire killed a sixth individual. Preliminary accounts point to possible extortion motives, though the exact circumstances have not been clarified.

Officials are working to verify the casualty figures and track down those responsible. The incident comes just a day after a comparable attack in Algeciras, Huila, which left two men and a woman dead. The regional Ombudsman's Office has issued alerts about the presence of multiple criminal gangs and the expansion of dissident factions of the defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the district.
