Six police officers suspended after man dies while in custody in West Champaran

A 25-year-old man died in police custody in Bihar’s West Champaran district, prompting the suspension of two sub-inspectors and four constables.

Dilshad Ansari, 25, was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in West Champaran and transported to Sahodra police station. Police claim he jumped from a moving vehicle, sustaining fatal injuries, and was declared dead after treatment at GMCH in Bettiah. His wife, Nagma Khatoon, and father, Akhbar Ansari, dispute the police account and have called for a high-level probe, alleging police brutality.

In response, Bettiah police suspended two sub-inspectors, Ravi Shankar Kumar and Arun Kumar, along with four constables—Saudagar Kumar Yadav, Raj Kumar Rishi, Kundan Kumar, and Suman Kumar. The incident stems from a case filed on August 8, 2025, and the suspended officers were attached to the Sahodra police station. The family continues to seek clarification over the circumstances of the death.
