Six Upper Yamuna Basin States Sign Agreement to Advance Kishau Multipurpose Project
Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi signed a pact in New Delhi to move forward with the Kishau dam and water-storage scheme.
In a ceremony in New Delhi, the chief ministers of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi signed a pact to advance the long-delayed Kishau Multipurpose Project on the Tons River. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil were present. The project calls for constructing a concrete gravity dam to create a storage capacity of 1,562 million cubic metres, irrigate about 97,000 hectares and produce 1,476 million units of hydropower.
The centre will shoulder roughly 90 % of the water-component costs, with the states covering the balance and sharing the power-related expenses. The agreement follows a June 2026 consensus that resolved earlier disputes over other basin projects. Officials say the dam will improve water flow in the Yamuna, benefiting Delhi and supporting environmental water needs.

The agreement could significantly increase water security and renewable energy for millions in the Upper Yamuna basin, especially Delhi.
