Six-Year-Old Boy Severely Injured After Tram Collision in Budapest's Batthyány Square

In late August, a tram in Budapest’s Batthyány Square collided with a six-year-old boy who was visiting the city with his family. The impact broke his hip, damaged several ribs and caused extensive internal trauma, leading to a nine-hour operation and continuous sedation. Medical teams have kept him alive on machines, but Hungarian doctors say his chances of survival are nil.

Rejecting this outlook, the parents used a foundation’s assistance to transfer him to a Bucharest hospital, where he continues to depend on life-support. Police investigations have focused on the boy’s father, who is now a suspect in the incident. The tram driver, who only perceived the crash, has been plagued by terrifying visions, cannot resume his duties or sleep, and is slated to retire in February.
