Sixteen Russian nationals charged with forging Romanian citizenship documents to obtain IDs

Sixteen Russian citizens have been indicted for using falsified Romanian citizenship certificates to acquire Romanian identity documents.

The High Court Prosecutor's Office has brought charges against sixteen Russian nationals for forgery, computer fraud and falsifying official records. Between February and July 2024 the accused allegedly used fake citizenship certificates claimed to be issued by the Romanian Consulate General in St. Petersburg, the Romanian Embassy in Baku, the Embassy in Moldova and the Consulate General in Chișinău. These documents enabled them to register birth records, receive personal numeric codes and obtain Romanian birth certificates from the local council in Sector 6, Bucharest.

They then applied for identity cards at the SPCLEP office in Câmpulung Moldovenesc and, using those cards, secured electronic passports from the Suceava passport service. Prosecutors seek confiscation of any illicit proceeds and request the court to cancel the forged citizenship certificates, the civil registry entries, the birth certificates and all derived identity documents. Police investigations also led to the cancellation of numerous identity cards issued on the basis of fictitious residence claims.
