Sixth Day of Anti-Government Protests in Tirana as Prime Minister Rama Deploys Renea Unit
Pro-government demonstrations entered their sixth day in Tirana, with students and citizens demanding Prime Minister Ettı Rama’s resignation, while the government sent the Renea special unit to control the crowds.
For the sixth straight day, anti-government rallies have surged through Tirana, drawing students, teachers and ordinary citizens who demand Prime Minister Ettı Rama step down. Participants have created an online portal that tracks protest sites, medical assistance stations and areas of heavy police presence. Rama countered the unrest by ordering the deployment of the Renea special armored anti-terrorism unit, citing the recent interception of a drone and explosives aimed at him and the presidential palace.
Security forces responded with rubber-bullet shots, tear-gas dispersals and water-cannon fire, leading to numerous injuries and extensive material damage. The protests reflect broader grievances over unemployment, education issues and rising living costs, while also linking to earlier coastal tourism opposition movements tied to Jarrent Kousner. The ongoing unrest poses a serious challenge to Rama’s administration, which secured a fourth term last election.
Why it matters
The protests reveal deepening political discontent in Albania and test the government's capacity to manage civil unrest.
