SK Group chief Chey Tae-won appeals court's 33% property split in divorce case
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has filed an appeal to the Supreme Court challenging the appellate court’s decision that awards his ex-wife Roh Soh-yeong a one-third share of their marital assets.
Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court seeking to overturn the Seoul High Court’s order that grants his former wife, Roh Soh-yeong, a 33.3 percent stake in their jointly held property. The appeal disputes the court’s decision to exclude a alleged 30-billion-won slush fund from Roh’s contribution, deeming the fund illegal even if it existed. Chey also challenges the court’s methodology of factoring in the surge of SK shares—from roughly 160,000 won to about 800,000 won—when determining the division.
The appellate court had previously set Roh’s share at 35 percent in its first ruling. Roh, daughter of the late former President Roh Tae-woo, must file a counter-document by Tuesday. The divorce, initiated in 2017 after Chey admitted to an extramarital affair and a child, involves three children from their 1988 marriage.
Why it matters
The case could set a precedent for how high-value corporate assets and alleged illicit funds are treated in South Korean divorce settlements.
