Skip tower at former Dolu ČSA in Karviné slated for demolition

State enterprise DIAMO plans to demolish the skip tower of the former Dolu Československé armády in Karviné, closing nearby roads during the operation.

DIAMO announced a demolition plan for the skip tower at the former Dolu Československé armády in Karviné, employing about 147 kilograms of explosives placed in 948 boreholes. The tower, located above the CSÁ3 shaft, will be taken down while the Karviné-Doubrava road is fully closed and traffic on the Karviné-Orlová-Ostrava corridor is significantly limited. The deep CSÁ3 shaft, 1,005 metres deep and 7.5 metres wide, has been backfilled since November of the previous year, requiring roughly one hundred thousand tonnes of fill material.

The Ministry of Culture continues to assess parts of the former mine complex for heritage status, excluding the deteriorated skip tower from protection. Experts from the National Heritage Institute highlighted several other mining structures that may receive protection, while the former coke plant and power-plant buildings were rejected due to poor condition and uncertain future use.

Why it matters

The demolition will affect local traffic and reflects ongoing decisions about preserving industrial heritage in the region.
