Sky to broadcast new TV adaptation of banned 1965 nuclear war drama
Sky will launch a four-part TV version of the once-banned 1965 pseudo-documentary The Wargame, now centred on a possible Russian attack on the UK.
Sky announced that it will air a televised adaptation of The Wargame, a 1965 pseudo-documentary that one outlet banned for two decades because of its graphic depiction of nuclear fallout. After the programme’s podcast version attracted attention, Sky is turning the concept into a four-part series that imagines a Russian assault on the United Kingdom. The show will bring together public figures such as Michael Gove, Nicola Sturgeon, Penny Mordaunt, and senior military leaders to debate response options.
Dame Penny Mordaunt posted on X about the original film’s censorship and cautioned viewers about the potential impact of the new scenarios. The original broadcast finally aired in 1985, coinciding with the Hiroshima anniversary, and was recently available on one outlet iPlayer and Amazon Prime Video. Executives from Sky and production company The Garden said the series aims to expose gaps in national resilience and deterrence policy.
