Skyrora completes 45-second hot-fire test of scaled-down XL rocket engine

Skyrora performed a 45-second hot-fire test of a scaled-down version of the engine intended for its XL orbital launch vehicle at a purpose-built site in Machrihanish, Argyll and Bute. The engine generated a column of fire and thick smoke, demonstrating the performance of critical subsystems for the three-stage, 23-metre rocket capable of delivering up to 315 kg of satellites to orbit. Dr Jack James Marlow, the company’s chief operating officer, said the test validates technology and informs refinements before the full-size vehicle reaches a launch pad.

Skyrora’s development strategy follows a cycle of testing, learning, and iteration to ensure reliability. Once operational, the XL rocket is planned to conduct roughly eight launches annually, targeting the expanding market for small-satellite deployments.
