Slovakia's Snina emerges as key hub for 155mm artillery shell production
The town of Snina in eastern Slovakia is becoming a central site for manufacturing 155mm artillery shells used by Ukraine's forces.
In the forested Carpathian region of eastern Slovakia, the town of Snina has turned into a strategic centre for the production of 155mm artillery shells, the primary calibre employed by the Ukrainian army. This development reflects a rapid expansion of Slovakia's defence sector, spurred by increased defence budgets across NATO members. The manufacturing complex is run by ZVS holding, which is jointly owned by the Slovak government and MSM Group, the latter being part of the Czech Czechoslovak Group that has become a leading private defence player in the region.
Ongoing construction and equipment upgrades indicate a surge in orders and investment flowing into the facility. The site forms one link in a wider European network supplying ammunition to front-line forces.
Why it matters
The expansion underscores Europe's growing role in supplying arms to Ukraine and the economic boost for Slovakia's defence sector.
