Slovenian opposition accuses foreign minister of blocking EU statement on Israeli settlements
Opposition parties allege that Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer prevented an EU declaration condemning Israeli settlements, claiming the move serves Israel’s interests.
Prime Minister Janez Janša’s administration has reversed the pro-Palestinian policies of his predecessor, Robert Golob, removing the Palestinian flag from government premises and ending an arms embargo on Israel. Reports in August indicated that Slovenia urged the EU to dilute a condemnation of Israeli settlements, a move praised by Israel and rebuked by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer claimed Slovenia “constructively contributed” to the discussions, but on 21 September three opposition parties submitted an interpellation demanding explanations for Slovenia’s solitary opposition to the EU statement.
They argue Kajzer blocked the text, did not notify the National Assembly as required, and effectively aligned Slovenia’s foreign policy with Israeli interests. Kajzer labeled the charges a stunt, while opposition MPs warned that a divided Europe cannot influence events effectively.
