The United States and its allies are witnessing a renaissance in nuclear innovation, with a crowded field of small modular and micro-reactor developers pursuing a range of cooling technologies and design philosophies. Despite achieving criticality and other laboratory milestones, these projects have not yet demonstrated a clear path to rapid, cost-effective commercial deployment. Historical precedents, including the over-budget Vogtle AP1000 builds and the 2023 cancellation of NuScale's flagship project, illustrate how engineering success can be undermined by manufacturing immaturity and weak offtake agreements.
