Social-Democratic Primary Draws Thousands of Voters Ahead of 2027 Presidential Race

Three televised debates gave the impression of a Socialist Party congress rather than a decisive contest for the 2027 presidential election. Over the weekend, the organizing commission confirmed a record number of eligible voters for the first round, which will be held on Friday and Saturday. Despite the high turnout, candidates struggled to unite the base, with debates focusing more on potential alliances with La France insoumise than on policy proposals.

The recent primary of the French social-democratic left resembled a Socialist Party congress, with three televised debates that failed to crown a clear presidential frontrunner. The organizing commission announced a record turnout of tens of thousands of registered voters for the first round scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Party leader Patrick Mennucci emphasized that this large electorate would ensure unity behind the eventual winner.

Nonetheless, the campaign was marked by discord, as candidates debated the prospect of an alliance with La France insoumise, sidelining substantive policy discussions. Raphaël Glucksmann and Olivier Faure exchanged accusations over past cooperation with the left-wing coalition, while Ségolène Royal repeatedly challenged Glucksmann, leading to a public apology from him. Both main contenders focused their outreach on party militants, with Faure traveling to regional federations to solidify support.
