Social Democrats offer health committee chair to Christian Democrats to forge Stockholm centre coalition
Social Democrats are proposing the chair of the health and care committee to the Christian Democrats to pull them into a centre-right coalition that would secure a majority in Stockholm’s regional council.
Following the recent regional election, the Social Democrats are steering negotiations toward a centre-right administration in Stockholm County. Their strategy hinges on attracting the Christian Democrats by proposing that Carl-Johan Schiller take the chair of the health and care committee, the second-most influential post after the finance council. The plan also seeks Liberal backing, granting them a modest regional council seat, while the Greens and Centre Party remain in the mix, together reaching a solid 80-seat majority out of 149.
The Left Party, despite being the third-largest party, would be pushed out of power, a move that could reverberate in ongoing national coalition talks. The Moderates are the only former governing party still outside the prospective alliance, and they are urging the centrist parties to reject the Social Democrat overtures. Both KD and the Liberals have given cautious responses, with KD’s spokesperson noting the need for a full party package before committing. Negotiations are expected to continue through the week.
