Social Security Benefits Poised for Largest Cost-of-Living Rise Since 2023

Forecasts show the 2027 Social Security COLA could be 3.5-3.6%, the biggest increase since the pandemic-driven 8.7% jump.

Leading estimates indicate that the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment will fall between 3.5% and 3.6%, eclipsing the 2.8% increase granted in 2026 and marking the largest rise since the 8.7% jump after the COVID-19 inflation surge. AARP’s forecast stands at 3.6%, while the Senior Citizens League expects 3.5%. The official percentage will be calculated using the CPI-W average for July-September, with the September figure due from the Bureau of Labor Statistics on October 14.

Assuming the higher estimate, a typical retired worker’s monthly benefit would grow by about $75, raising the average check to roughly $2,163. Disabled workers and SSI recipients would see modest dollar gains as well. The adjustment will take effect for December 2026 payments, reaching beneficiaries in January 2027.

Why it matters

Higher COLA helps over 70 million retirees and disabled Americans keep pace with inflation.
