Social Security expands Compassionate Allowances with 14 new medical conditions

The Social Security Administration disclosed that it is adding 14 additional medical conditions to its Compassionate Allowances roster, a program created in 2008 to speed up disability benefits for severe cases. The new entries include rare pediatric and neurological disorders such as Aicardi syndrome and Baraitser-Winter syndrome, as well as uncommon cancers like primary cardiac sarcoma. With these additions, the list now totals 314 conditions and has already facilitated faster approvals for about 1.2 million claimants.

The agency uses automated scanning to flag applications containing listed conditions, often granting benefits within days instead of the usual six to eight months. Commissioner Frank Bisignano said the initiative reduces bureaucratic delays for individuals confronting serious health challenges. Law firms note that the expedited process can dramatically shorten the waiting period for eligible applicants.
