Social Security orders mid-70s retiree to repay $35,000 overpayment within 30 days

A woman in her mid-70s was sent a letter by the Social Security Administration stating she must repay $35,000 that resulted from four years of overpaid benefits. The notice gave her only 30 days to settle the balance, warning that failure to do so would trigger a 50% reduction in her monthly benefit for the next two years, leaving her with roughly $1,350 each month. She discovered the issue after her check was cut by about $600 in February, prompting calls to the agency for clarification.

The SSA said it strives to avoid additional harm in overpayment cases, particularly when the beneficiary did not cause the error. The administration allows affected individuals to request a waiver or file an appeal within 30 days, which would halt collection efforts pending a decision. Overpayment notices are sent to around two million people annually, often due to missing or incorrect personal information.
