Socialist deputies brace to block 2027 budget unless Prime Minister reverses cuts

Socialist lawmakers are poised to oppose the 2027 finance bill, warning they will block it if the prime minister does not change key spending cuts.

Socialist members of parliament are preparing to block the upcoming 2027 finance bill unless the prime minister alters disputed budgetary cuts. A delegation met Wednesday with Public Accounts Minister David Amiel, with additional meetings scheduled with the ministries of Labour and Health. Socialist MP Estelle Mercier, who oversees the finance bill for her constituency, said the party will present concrete, credible measures that do not shift the burden onto the middle class, retirees, renters or the sick.

The negotiations come after Sébastien Lecornu sent a letter to Socialist legislators urging dialogue. The party, which identifies as the governing left, officially remains open to talks but signals it will resist any plan that harms vulnerable groups.

Why it matters

The budget showdown could stall key government spending and affect millions of French citizens.
