Söder pushes fast-track anti-expropriation law, warns of coalition strain

CSU leader Markus Söder urged the swift passage of a law banning expropriation, pressing SPD housing minister Verena Hubertz to act, while the SPD remains opposed.

Markus Söder, head of the CSU, told ARD that the coalition must promptly adopt a law preventing the socialisation and expropriation of property, a proposal settled before the summer recess. He urged the SPD’s housing minister, Verena Hubertz, to launch the legislation without delay, emphasizing that the CSU is exerting pressure for swift action. The SPD continues to oppose the bill, which could spark renewed tension between the parties.

Söder framed the expropriation debate as a “smokescreen,” accusing the Left of planning protests from France and warning of potential demonstrations and street fights. He also criticized one outlet fiscal equalisation system, suggesting richer states keep more of their funds to avoid subsidising what he called “socialist experiments” in poorer regions. Söder concluded that the government must focus on delivering concrete economic results rather than internal disputes.

Why it matters

The dispute could jeopardise the stability of Germany's governing coalition and delay a key property-rights reform.
