Söderåsen plateau transformed from open heath to protected broadleaf forest

A 2025 study shows Sweden’s Söderåsen plateau shifted from open grazing land in the 18th-19th centuries to today’s 1,625-hectare national park of continuous broadleaf forest.

Sediment analysis from Lake Odensjön, detailed in a 2025 Holocene article, traced roughly 600 years of vegetation dynamics on the Söderåsen plateau in southern Sweden, showing that the 18th and 19th centuries saw a marked opening of the landscape as grazing intensified and heathland spread through clearing and burning. The ridge, now famed for its steep valleys, exposed rock faces and flowing streams, was formally protected as Söderåsen National Park on May 10 2001, encompassing 1,625 hectares across the municipalities of Klippan and Svalöv in Skåne County.

The park’s primary natural environment is a continuous broadleaf forest, with beech as the dominant species and oak, alder and birch also present, alongside some planted spruce. Managed by Länsstyrelsen Skåne on behalf of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the park safeguards a mosaic of habitats, including the dramatic Skäralid valley and the lake Odensjön. The transition from heavily used open land to a thriving forest demonstrates the capacity of ecosystems to recover when human pressure eases and legal protection is applied. The case underscores that conservation can involve restoring landscapes rather than merely preserving a static historical state.
