Solar-Powered Irrigation System Launched for Eastern Visayas Farmers
The National Irrigation Administration handed over a solar-driven irrigation network to 87 farmers in Barangay Guintigui-an, providing year-round water for 70 hectares.
In a ceremony on October 9, the National Irrigation Administration transferred the Guintigui-an Solar Pump Irrigation Project to local growers. The system uses solar energy to run five 15-horsepower submersible pumps linked to a pipe network and farm-level sprinklers. It will supply water continuously to about 70 hectares of crops, reducing reliance on conventional power sources amid El Niño-related drought.
Why it matters
Solar irrigation helps farmers sustain crops during droughts, boosting food security and climate resilience.
