Solar-powered mobile clinic unveiled to deliver off-grid healthcare in remote regions

A student team from the Netherlands has built Stella Juva, a solar-driven ambulance that functions as a mobile clinic for underserved areas.

Solar Team Eindhoven, a nonprofit student organization at Eindhoven University of Technology, has introduced Stella Juva, which they describe as the world’s first solar-powered ambulance that operates as a mobile clinic. The vehicle’s roof is covered with AIKO’s All Back Contact solar cells, feeding a 50-kWh lithium battery that powers both propulsion and a climate-controlled medical cabin. Weighing about 1,350 kg and capable of reaching roughly 75 mph, Stella Juva can carry equipment for tuberculosis screening, pregnancy ultrasounds, malaria testing, vaccinations and an automated external defibrillator, all while keeping vaccines refrigerated.

Its electrical system can prioritize medical devices if driving range runs low, and pure sine-wave inverters protect sensitive tools from voltage fluctuations. The prototype will be taken to Kenya in August for field trials with Amref Health Africa, where it will be driven over hundreds of kilometres and used in simulated healthcare scenarios. While the project remains a research prototype, the team hopes the open-source design will inspire larger manufacturers to develop scalable, off-grid medical vehicles.
