Son uses AI search to identify vitamin deficiency that saved mother's life

Edward Patrick, an NHS anaesthetist, used an online AI search to discover his mother’s seizures were caused by a vitamin B6 deficiency, leading to a life-saving treatment.

At 4 a.m., Edward Patrick received an urgent call to attend his mother Ann, who was experiencing severe seizures at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. While driving from Oxfordshire, a message from his brother hinted that a vitamin deficiency could be the trigger. Ignoring his initial dread, Edward searched her symptoms on his phone and pinpointed a vitamin B6 deficiency linked to her Parkinson’s drugs.

He presented the finding to on-call neurologist Dr Bruno Gran, who promptly gave her a B6 infusion, stopping the seizures and preventing further muscle damage. Ann, now in her late seventies, has not required readmission and appears mentally sharper. The case is being prepared for publication in the journal Neurology, and researchers caution that patients should not self-medicate without medical supervision.
