Sonia Gandhi Announces Memoir Detailing Love, Loss and Refusal of Prime Ministership

Sonia Gandhi will publish a memoir titled “Belonging: A Journey of Love” on Nov. 10, reflecting on her marriage into the Nehru-Gandhi family, personal tragedies and her decision to turn down the prime minister’s post.

Sonia Gandhi, the 79-year-old former head of the Indian National Congress, announced a new memoir called “Belonging: A Journey of Love,” slated for publication on Nov. 10 by Alfred A. Knopf. In the book she plans to recount her transition from an Italian student in Cambridge to a member of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty after marrying Rajiv Gandhi. She details how the 1984 assassination of her mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi, and the later murder of her husband reshaped her life and pushed her into politics.

Gandhi also explains why she declined her party’s invitation to assume the prime minister’s office, a role later taken by the BJP under Narendra Modi. The narrative promises insights into the social and political transformations she has witnessed across six decades, while noting that her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remain active Congress parliamentarians.

Why it matters

The memoir provides a rare personal view of India’s most influential political family and recent history.
