Sonic Fire Tech secures $15 million to launch sound-based fire suppression system

Ohio startup Sonic Fire Tech raised $15 million to develop a sound-driven fire protection system that extinguishes flames in seconds without water or chemicals.

Sonic Fire Tech, based in Ohio, disclosed a $15 million investment led by the O.H.I.O. Fund and joined by Khosla Ventures, following a $3.5 million seed round. Co-founder and CEO Geoff Bruder believes the sound-powered suppression method will achieve National Fire Protection Association approval faster than the typical three-year timeline because it avoids post-fire water or chemical damage.

The technology uses an inaudible generator to emit infrasonic waves through PVC ceiling pipes, instantly quenching flames when room sensors detect a fire. COO Remington Bixby Hotchkis notes the system’s rapid response and reduced false-alarm concerns, making it attractive to insurers seeking premium discounts. Early trials show the approach can contain lithium-ion battery fires and could protect kitchens, commercial buildings and homes, including retrofits and new construction. Development of an exterior wildfire protection version is ongoing while the company seeks testing facilities.

Why it matters

A fast, mess-free fire suppression method could lower damage costs and improve safety for homes and businesses.
