Sony unveils the A7R VI, a 66.8-MP powerhouse for versatile shooting

Sony's latest high-resolution mirrorless model, the A7R VI, pushes the envelope with a 66.8-megapixel stacked sensor and the Bionz XR2 image processor, allowing continuous shooting at 30 frames per second without viewfinder blackout. The camera supports silent electronic shutter operation, making it suitable for discreet events, and offers 8.5 stops of in-body image stabilization along with dual USB-C connections. Its AI-based autofocus provides refined eye and subject tracking, though reviewers note it feels slightly more "sticky" than previous generations.

The new NP-SA100 battery supplies enough power for the processor but does not extend the CIPA-rated 600-plus shot count and is incompatible with older NP-FZ100 cells. Priced around $4,500, the A7R VI combines the resolution of the A7R line with many of the speed attributes of the A1 and A9 series, positioning it as a versatile all-rounder for photographers across genres.
