Sony unveils ultra-luxury gold-plated Walkman models priced up to $5,900
Sony introduced three new Walkman players for audiophiles, ranging from $1,899.99 to a $5,899 gold-plated version.
Sony has launched three premium Walkman portable media players aimed at the audiophile market. Prices begin at $1,899.99 for the NW-ZX900, rise to $2,999.99 for the NW-WM1AM3, and peak at $5,899 for the gold-plated NW-WM1ZM3. Each model incorporates Sony’s Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Remastering Engine, which up-samples PCM audio to an 11.2 MHz DSD stream for a more analog-like sound.
The chassis of all three units is gold-plated to lessen electromagnetic interference, while the two higher-priced models add hand-soldered oxygen-free copper wiring and upgraded power circuitry. The NW-WM1ZM3’s entire chassis is made from oxygen-free copper before being gold-plated, distinguishing it from earlier versions.
Why it matters
The launch shows Sony targeting ultra-wealthy audiophiles with high-priced, technically advanced portable players.
