Sorina Matei nominated to lead Romania's public TV broadcaster

Sorina Matei has been put forward as the new director of the Societății Române de Televiziune (SRTv). The proposal was slated for consideration by the joint permanent bureau of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate today, with specialist committee hearings planned for tomorrow before a final parliamentary vote. Should the measure pass, Matei would succeed Adriana Săftoiu at the helm of the public broadcaster.

The appointment comes after the Curtea Constituțională a României upheld AUR’s request for party representation on the governing boards of TVR and Radio România proportional to its parliamentary share. Matei began her journalism career in 1997, reporting for Jurnalul Național and later covering politics for over a decade at the Cotroceni Palace under three presidents, before moving to television stations such as Antena 1, B1TV, Digi24 and most recently one outlet-Mediafax. A separate candidate, Răzvan Dincă, is expected to be proposed for the leadership of the public radio service.
