Sorrento Beach shut after whale carcass sighting prompts shark warning
A whale carcass spotted at Sorrento Beach led authorities to close the beach and issue a shark alert for the area.
Early on Sunday, Surf Life Saving WA observed a whale carcass on Sorrento Beach in Perth's northern suburbs, leading the City of Joondalup to immediately close the popular spot. Officials also issued a shark advice alert, noting that the decaying body might draw sharks toward swimmers. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is overseeing the response and providing guidance to local authorities.
This follows a similar incident at Dutch Inn Beach near Cottesloe earlier in the week, where a juvenile whale was removed by town rangers and taken to the Red Hill Waste Management Facility. Both incidents highlight the recurring presence of whale remains on Perth's coastline, with previous large whale strandings also attracting great white sharks. The beach will remain closed until the carcass is fully removed, though a reopening date has not been announced.
Why it matters
Beach closures and shark alerts affect public safety and local recreation on Perth's coastline.
