South Korea and Norway discuss expanding defence, tech and fisheries ties

South Korean deputy foreign minister Chung Eui-hye met Norway’s deputy foreign minister Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik in Seoul to explore deeper cooperation in defence, advanced technology and fisheries.

In Seoul, senior diplomats from South Korea and Norway met to discuss broadening their bilateral partnership. Deputy foreign minister for political affairs Chung Eui-hye expressed a desire to deepen cooperation in defence, fisheries and cutting-edge technology, while seeking Norway’s ongoing support for South Korean infrastructure projects on European soil. Kravik noted the growing closeness of ties and suggested that Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store could visit South Korea at a convenient time.

The officials also reviewed major regional issues, including the Korean Peninsula, the Middle East and the conflict in Ukraine, and agreed to work together on artificial intelligence, multilateralism and upholding a rules-based international order. The meeting referenced the historic contribution of a Norwegian medical unit during the 1950-53 Korean War and anticipated further high-level exchanges, such as a leaders’ summit on the sidelines of the NATO gathering.

Why it matters

The talks could lead to stronger defence and tech collaboration between two NATO partners amid rising global tensions.
