South Korea and the United States convene forum on expanding Global South cooperation

On Thursday, the Korea-U.S. Public Diplomacy Forum was hosted at Georgetown University, bringing together officials from Seoul and Washington to chart deeper strategic cooperation with the Global South. The event, organized by South Korea’s foreign ministry, was themed around the evolving international order and the opportunities it presents for bilateral collaboration. Participants reviewed recent geopolitical and economic security trends affecting emerging economies in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

Discussions centered on expanding joint public-diplomacy programs and identifying sector-specific initiatives. Yoon Chu-sok, deputy chief of mission at the South Korean Embassy in Washington, noted the Global South’s rising significance because of its large population, expanding economies and abundant critical minerals. The ministry said it will continue to design programs and events across various regions to broaden the scope of public diplomacy between the two allies.
