South Korea decides not to attend Sado mine memorial ceremony
South Korea announced it will skip the memorial ceremony for the Sado mine in Japan, citing unresolved core issues with Japanese officials.
The foreign ministry said the government has been in serious talks with Japan to ensure the ceremony can be fully held, but no agreement on key points was reached. Consequently, officials will not be present at the event. The Sado mine, a site where Koreans were forced to work under harsh conditions during the colonial era, was recently added to UNESCO's World Heritage list. Japan had pledged to include the full history of Korean laborers and to hold annual memorials, but disputes remain.
