South Korea on track to smash foreign visitor record well before year-end
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism reports that foreign arrivals have already exceeded last year’s total, putting the country on pace for a new annual record.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, foreign tourist arrivals in South Korea have already surpassed last year’s annual figure of 18.94 million, reaching roughly 18.91 million to date. If one outlet trend continues, an additional 1.94 million visitors are projected for the coming month, which would lift the cumulative total above 20 million in the third week of November. Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Chae Hwi-young said this early achievement brings the government’s goal of 23 million foreign visitors by the end of the year within reach.
Visitor numbers have risen across major source markets, including Chinese-speaking regions, Japan, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas, and are spreading beyond Seoul to regional airports and ports. The ministry highlighted a 47.7 percent jump in tourist spending, driven by shopping, accommodation and medical-wellness services, attributing the surge to Korean pop culture, industry innovation and hospitality. Authorities aim to balance quantity with quality to cement Korea’s status as a must-visit destination.
Why it matters
The surge signals a strong rebound for South Korea’s tourism sector, boosting the economy and supporting related industries.
