South Korea's budget ministry to launch AI-driven review of 2028 spending cuts

South Korea's Ministry of Planning and Budget will start a review in November to identify spending cuts for the 2028 budget, using AI and input from private experts and civil society.

South Korea's Ministry of Planning and Budget said it will commence a detailed review of spending-restructuring measures in November, aiming to shape the 2028 budget proposal. The effort follows the inclusion of 88 cost-cutting actions that reduced expenditures by 44.2 trillion won in the 2027 budget draft. Budget Minister Park Hong-geun emphasized a faster, more precise elimination of inefficient spending and announced plans to involve private-sector experts and civil-society groups.

The ministry will deploy artificial-intelligence assistants to examine potential tasks, considering concerns from the National Assembly, the audit board and the press, and will benchmark against similar international cases. This AI-enhanced approach is intended to generate realistic solutions and improve overall fiscal efficiency.

Why it matters

The review could reshape South Korea's fiscal policy, affecting public services and economic stability.
