South Korea's defence chief stresses alliance and readiness on first USFK base visit

Defence Minister Kang Shin-chul visited Camp Humphreys, highlighting the South Korea-U.S. alliance and joint readiness.

During his first official visit since taking office, Defence Minister Kang Shin-chul toured Camp Humphreys, the main U.S. military installation south of Seoul. He held talks with U.S. Forces Korea Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson, covering a range of topics such as the recent mine blast in the Demilitarised Zone that wounded three South Korean soldiers and the ongoing transition of wartime operational control from Washington to Seoul.

Kang reaffirmed the solid combined defence stance and the resolve to act together, citing historical lessons of war. He also praised the senior leadership of USFK, the United Nations Command and the Combined Forces Command for their role in preserving peace on the Korean Peninsula. The discussions reflect heightened concerns over the peninsula’s security landscape.
