South Korea's exports surge to record levels as economy steadies
South Korea's finance ministry reports a solid economic recovery, driven by an 83.5% jump in September exports and modest gains in domestic consumption.
In its latest monthly report, the Ministry of Finance and Economy noted that South Korea's economy continues to recover, supported by a sharp rise in exports and a modest rebound in household spending. September export value hit a historic US$120.9 billion, an 83.5% increase from a year earlier, propelled by semiconductor shipments that exceeded US$60 billion for the first time. Investment in facilities climbed 6.3% year-on-year during the second quarter, and private consumption grew 2.4% over the same period.
Consumer price inflation slowed to 2.9% in September, down from 3.1% the month before, but remains elevated. The ministry cautioned that ongoing uncertainties from the Middle East conflict, higher oil costs, and a tight labour market continue to burden lower-income households.
Why it matters
South Korea's export boom signals a rebound for the world's 10th-largest economy, affecting global supply chains and trade balances.
