South Korea's ICT exports hit record high as AI demand surges

In August, South Korea's ICT product shipments reached a historic $59.98 billion, driven by strong global AI investment.

South Korea recorded its highest ever ICT export value in August, with shipments totaling $59.98 billion, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT. This represented a rise of 162.6% from the same month a year earlier and pushed ICT products above 60% of the country's total exports for the first time. Semiconductor exports jumped to $46.67 billion, while computers and communications equipment surged, and mobile phone shipments grew modestly.

Display panel exports declined by 7% amid cost pressures from rising memory prices. Export growth was led by China, Hong Kong, the United States, Vietnam, the European Union and India, while imports rose 48.8% to $18.61 billion, resulting in a $41.37 billion trade surplus, the first to exceed $40 billion.

Why it matters

The surge highlights South Korea's pivotal role in global AI supply chains and strengthens its trade balance.
