South Korea sees 33.8% surge in drug manufacturing and smuggling arrests

Police say arrests for drug manufacturing and smuggling rose 33.8% in South Korea during January-August, with total drug-related arrests up 5.3% year-on-year.

The Korean National Police Agency’s National Office of Investigation announced that arrests for drug manufacturing and smuggling climbed 33.8% in the first eight months of this year, with 174 suspects detained compared with 130 in the same period last year. Arrests for drug dealing also increased 6.6% to 3,396, bringing the total number of people caught for drug-related offenses to 9,530, a 5.3% rise. Cases involving medical drugs rose 11.9% to 706 arrests.

A high-profile operation saw the repatriation and detention of notorious trafficker Park Wang-yeol from the Philippines, linked to 12.7 kg of methamphetamine and 6.3 billion won in drugs, and the capture of his key supplier Choi Byeong-min in Thailand, uncovering 41 further offenses and seizing 6 billion won in proceeds. The NOI said it will strengthen ties with domestic and foreign agencies and host an international narcotics conference next month to expand cooperation.

Why it matters

The rise signals growing drug activity in South Korea and underscores the need for stronger cross-border law-enforcement collaboration.
