South Korea to host Latin American food safety officials and boost export ties
South Korea will welcome 32 food-safety officials from eight Latin American nations for a week-long training program aimed at strengthening import safeguards and supporting Korean food exporters.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that 32 food-safety representatives from eight Latin American countries will attend a training session in South Korea between Oct. 26 and Nov. 2. Participants from Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru will study Korea’s regulatory framework, import inspection methods and digital safety management systems. On Oct. 28, Korean food companies will receive a briefing covering export strategies, support programs and the standards of the host nations.
Delegates will also tour key production sites, including Pulmuone’s global kimchi facility, a Harim Industry plant and Maeil Dairies’ Sangha dairy operation, to observe hygiene and quality practices. The program, now in its fourth year, is funded under an official development assistance scheme running from 2023 through 2027 and is organized jointly by the ministry and the Korea Agency of HACCP Accreditation and Services (KAHAS). Food and Drug Safety Minister Oh Yu-kyoung highlighted the role of such cooperation in building trust for safe food trade and expanding Korean exports.
Why it matters
The program aims to improve food safety standards and open new markets for Korean food producers in Latin America.
