South Korea to petition UN Security Council for North Korean apology over DMZ mine blast

Seoul will send a letter to the UN Security Council president urging North Korea to apologise for a mine explosion that injured three South Korean soldiers in the DMZ.

South Korea's foreign ministry said it will forward a letter to the president of the UN Security Council, asking North Korea to apologise for a land-mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone that injured three South Korean troops, two of them seriously. A joint investigation by the South Korean military and the UN Command concluded the mines were placed by North Korean personnel, violating the Armistice Agreement. The letter, to be sent under the name of South Korea's ambassador to the United Nations, will demand an apology and responsible measures from Pyongyang.

It will also request dialogue aimed at preventing escalation and rebuilding trust. The ministry spokesperson Park Doo-soon outlined these points during a regular press briefing.

Why it matters

The move signals heightened diplomatic pressure on North Korea after a dangerous breach of the DMZ that harmed South Korean soldiers.
