South Korea to ship medical equipment to North Korean hospital by late November
Seoul plans to deliver medical devices to a Pyongyang hospital under a UN sanctions exemption, with shipment slated for late November.
A UN Security Council 1718 Committee exemption granted on May 22 allows South Korea to provide medical equipment to Kangdong County Hospital in Pyongyang. The shipment, organized by the unification ministry and the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare, includes diagnostic tools, operating tables and other surgical gear across 166 categories, with an estimated value of US$6.75 million. The government aims to send the items by November 22, within six months of the approval, while the exemption lasts nine months.
Hyundai Asan Corp. will handle transport from Incheon to Nampho via Dandong, China. Officials stress the assistance is still provisional and will be finalized after consultations with the North. Opposition lawmaker Kim Dae-sik questioned the timing, citing recent DMZ mine explosions that injured South Korean soldiers.
Why it matters
The aid could improve North Korea's healthcare but occurs amid heightened inter-Korean tensions.
