South Korea, U.S. and Japan discuss response to North Korea's latest missile tests
Senior diplomats from South Korea, the United States and Japan held a phone call to exchange information and consider reactions after North Korea launched several ballistic missiles.
South Korea, the United States and Japan conducted a senior-level telephone consultation on Tuesday to coordinate their response to North Korea's latest missile activity. The North fired multiple ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Monday, and claimed a test of a tactical missile to check improvements to a critical weapons component. Baek Yong-jin, David Wilezol and Takashi Ariyoshi exchanged relevant data and deliberated on possible future actions.
The talks came after Seoul publicised its first successful hypersonic glide vehicle test, which the North likely intended to counter. Both sides noted that a standing information-sharing channel exists for prompt assessment whenever Pyongyang launches missiles. The joint statement underscored continued cooperation under each country's defense and foreign ministries.
