South Korea urges North Korea to stop border provocations and engage in dialogue

Seoul's unification ministry called on Pyongyang to halt armistice violations and respond to South Korean de-escalation efforts after recent border tensions.

South Korea's unification ministry urged North Korea to stop actions that breach the armistice and to cooperate with Seoul's initiatives to resolve disputes over the Military Demarcation Line. The appeal came after Kim Yo-jong warned of deploying additional tactical weapons and reviving loudspeaker broadcasts in response to South Korean warning shots aimed at deterring MDL incursions. Seoul maintains that its broadcasts and shots are legitimate defensive steps to prevent North Korean troops from crossing the line.

The ministry emphasized the need for both sides to reconcile their positions on the MDL and to set up a communication mechanism for peaceful management. It also called on Pyongyang to answer Seoul's efforts to prevent unnecessary escalation and achieve an effective resolution. Officials said any resumption of loudspeaker broadcasts would be met with a responsible review of necessary measures in coordination with relevant agencies.
