South Korea urges North to halt border provocations after loudspeaker threat

Seoul’s unification ministry asked Pyongyang to stop actions that could spark clashes after Kim Yo-jong warned of resuming loudspeaker broadcasts toward the South.

South Korea’s unification ministry issued a statement demanding that North Korea cease any actions that could increase the risk of clashes along the border, following Kim Yo-jong’s threat to restart propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts aimed at Seoul. The ministry emphasized that violations of the Armistice and heightened tensions along the Military Demarcation Line must stop at once. It noted that loudspeaker use by both Koreas continued until June 2025, inflicting considerable suffering on people living nearby.

The ministry advocated for a rapid establishment of a communication system to manage the MDL peacefully and called on Pyongyang to end its threats and work toward a concrete resolution. Seoul has suggested military talks to clarify the MDL and prevent accidental incidents, but North Korea has not responded. Recent border fortification efforts have already led to South Korean forces issuing warning broadcasts and firing warning shots to push back North Korean troops crossing the line.

Why it matters

Escalating border actions risk renewed military clashes on the Korean Peninsula.
